Southeast Conservation Corps: The Southeast Conservation Corps (SECC) is a non-profit service organization built on the legacy of the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) that operated from 1933-1942. SECC provides youth, young adults, and recent-era veterans opportunities to complete conservation projects on public and private lands throughout Tennessee and the Southeast Region. While serving with SECC members learn job training skills, conflict resolution, leadership, teamwork, and environmental stewardship. Programs are structured using a stepladder approach to provide a progression of skill development based on a member’s needs. SECC runs field programs from March – November, with the peak season being May – August, when adult and youth crews are operating at once. During peak season, up to seven crews can run at one time. SECC engages approximately 120 members per year throughout youth, adult, and veteran crews, as well as internships. Position Summary: The Field Supervisor’s primary role is to provide leadership, logistical, and field support to all SECC conservation crews. The position requires a significant field presence to assist crews with project needs, as well as management of the SECC shop. Field visits cover a multi-state footprint including, but not limited to, TN, GA, NC, MS, and AL. Field time will consist of day crew visits in close proximity to the SECC office and overnight visits to camping crews. The work plan for this position is based on organizational needs. This individual will be expected to work as a member of a team and independently.
Essential Responsibilities and Functions:
Field Support, Maintain a staff presence in the field, including frequent overnight stays to assist in managing on-the-ground project quality and quantity by providing technical assistance, Maintain strong working relationships with a diverse array of land managers. Enforce and exemplify all SECC, CL, and agency policies and procedures while in the field and at office/shop. Facilitate rig-up and de-rig events and procedures. Maintain shop space to operate efficiently, including tracking and repairing hand and power tools. Track and schedule vehicle and trailer maintenance. Assist in the implementation of Crew Leader and Crew Member trainings Serve as substitute crew leader as needed. Provide encouragement, guidelines, and supervision to corpsmembers and crew leaders throughout their tenure. Facilitate behavior improvement and disciplinary procedures when needed. Maintain shop space to operate efficiently, including tracking and repairing hand and power tools. Help maintain and manage the vehicle and trailer fleet. Track and maintain field equipment and gear as it relates to camping equipment. Assist Program Coordinator to work within an established program budget for tools, gear, equipment, and vehicle & trailer maintenance. Assist with food purchasing for crews when needed. Assist with other general duties as needed or assigned by supervisor. Work with other SECC and local board members on pressing projects when appropriate. Serve as a responder to SECC field emergencies, including being “on-call” for after-hours support. Shop and Vehicle Support
Work in collaboration with the Program Director and Program Coordinator to train, mentor, and supervise a broad scope of corpsmembers and crew leaders across all SECC programs. · Assist Program Coordinator in the implementation of crew leader and corpsmember trainings including technical work, protocols, leadership, and facilitation skills. Be a role model and mentor throughout training and field season. Physical Requirements: Regular overnight travel and non-traditional work hours, inclusive of weekend and evening hours. To successfully perform essential functions the Field Supervisor is required to sit, stand, walk, speak and hear. The Field Supervisor may be required to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl on an infrequent basis. He/she must be able to operate office equipment, telephone, and computer and reach with hands and arms. The Field Supervisor may be required to lift up to 50 pounds unassisted. The ability to drive an organizational vehicle is also required. Reasonable accommodations may be made for qualified individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
Minimum of 2 years of experience in field or specific duty. Experience with field crews, conservation work, and tool maintenance. Demonstrated ability to mentor young adults working in remote outdoors settings performing arduous physical labor. Technical competence and experience in dry stone masonry, full bench trail construction, fencing, invasive species removal, chainsaw operations, etc. Flexibility, adaptability and capacity to work in a fluid, changing work environment. The ability to communicate professionally both internally and externally with stakeholders. Minimum of 2 years of supervising others in the work environment.
Minimum of educational experience:
BA or AA in fields related to Environmental Science, Natural Resources, Forestry, or a related field OR prior experience working for a Conservation Corps, or AmeriCorps program – most preference given to applicants with experience working for a program within Conservation Legacy. Proficient in computer programs, databases, other technology; ability to manage data in an organized, consistent, and timely manner. Valid driver’s license and an insurable driving record. Must be able to pass Conservation Legacy’s criminal history background check. · Must hold an official and current certification as a Wilderness First Responder and a National Sawyer Chainsaw Certification level B felling, limbing, and bucking.
